Materials Selection

Materials Selection: Books / Standing Orders

Books, annual publications, monographic series and sets are selected primarily by Villanova faculty to meet their teaching and research needs. Requests to purchase a new book for the library's collection can be sent to the Acquisitions Department. Collection Development & Management attempts to identify needed standing orders and discuss with faculty the desirability of acquiring publications this way.

Although library hours of operation are extended at night and on weekends, contact either the Acquisitions or the Collection Development and Management departments between 8:00 - 4:00 Monday - Friday for additional information about recommending books / standing orders for the library's collection.

Materials Selection: Periodicals

Faculty may suggest new periodical subscriptions by contacting the Periodicals Department. The library needs to ascertain the nature of request and the level of need for the title. This information is critical because the library, for budgetary reasons, is not able to subscribe to all periodicals requested.

Occasionally, academic departments are asked to review the list of periodical titles that Falvey owns. Title cancellations may be requested in order to free up funds for new subscriptions or to allow Falvey to stay within budget during the current fiscal year.

Although library hours of operation are extended at night and on weekends, contact the Collection Development & Management department between 8:00 - 4:00 Monday - Friday for additional information about recommending periodicals or journal cancellation projects.

Materials Selection: Other Library Materials

The selection of all reference books and electronic resources is coordinated by the Reference Department. The selection of audio-visual material is coordinated by the Media Technologies / Creative Design (MT/CD).

Although library hours of operation are extended at night and on weekends, contact either Reference, MT/CD, or the Collection Development & Management departments between 8:00 - 4:00 Monday - Friday for additional information about recommending other material for the library's collection.
