Mercedes Juliá, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Romance Language and Literature department will discuss her new book, De la nueva luz: En torno a la poesía última de Juan Ramón Jiménez. Juan Ramon Jiménez was a renowned and prolific poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. One of his most important contributions to modern poetry was the idea of “ la poesía desnuda” (“naked poetry”), an attempt to strip his poetry of all extraneous matter and to produce it in free verse, without formal metres, of a purer nature. Jiménez’s contributions to literature, especially poetry, is celebrated during Hispanic Heritage Month.
