David C. Steinmetz, Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the History of Christianity, will present a lecture titled "Martin Luther and the Theological Influence of the Augustinian Order: The Case of Johann von Staupitz OESA." According to Steinmetz, Luther claimed that his superior in the Augustinian Order, Johann von Staupitz, was the originator of the teaching that eventually evolved into early Protestant theology. Luther's unqualified claim helped to stimulate a debate in the 19th century over the question of forerunners of the Reformation, i.e. medieval theologians who anticipated in one way or another aspects of Protestant thought. His lecture will reexamine such claims and try to resolve some of the troubling historical issues.
