Paper for the People: A Conference on Dime Novels and Early Mass-Market Publishing

When:

Monday, June 10th, 2013, at 8:30 AM

Where:

Speakers' Corner

Event Description:

In the 19th century, there were no summer blockbusters, hit TV series or even radio dramas. However, there was already a thriving entertainment industry thrilling millions of people, and one of the key components of this industry was the dime novel: a brief, twisty, action-packed story designed purely to entertain. While heroes and tales from the dime novel era are largely forgotten today, they have left a huge mark on popular culture in general. Paper for the People, the first conference in Falvey Memorial Library's Popular Culture Series, will examine the history and significance of dime novels and related entertainments through scholarly presentations and discussions. It will be accompanied by an exhibit of rare publications. The event takes place on June 10 in the library, and anyone interested in attending may register for free at http://vupop.org
