Dramaturgy student needed historical background on the time periods covered in Churchill's play, Cloud Nine: the 1850s and 1950s in Britain, in reference to racism, colonialism and feminism, sexuality, gender.

Answer

  1. Answer by: Olsen, Judith

Started with the E-Reference sources in History having to do with British history. A key word search on colonies was productive and the encyclopedia also provided a linkable time line. That strategy could be applied to other aspects as well.

We looked at the Cambridge Companions to feminism, postcolonialism, Churchill to provide some context as well.

In the catalog, searching key words like fifties, racism, feminism, etc. in various combinations worked well.

Interestingly, the play was written at the end of the 70s when historical events (Rhodesia, women's rights, etc.) provided a context that would make these issues relevant to audiences.
