NOTES ON BIBLIOGRAPHY

The types of documents cited are as follows:

    • Include the doi number if it is provided. If there is no doi number, you can include Retrieved from …….  and the name of the database, such as Retrieved from PubMed.
    • Liu – example of a source with more than 8 authors.  The names of the first 6 authors are listed, then an ellipsis (…) and then the name of the LAST author.
  • What educators and students really think -  a source without an author.  Start with the title and interfile alphabetically.
  • Burns, Clark -  books.  Note that the Burns title is the 5th edition.  Editions other than the 1st ed. need to be noted.
  • Neel  – Part of a book.
  • Capitalization
    • Book and journal article titles: Capitalize ONLY first letter of the first word  and any proper nouns or proper adjectives in title and subtitle:

  • Journal titles – Capitalize first letter of EVERY important word:
    Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing
  • Adams, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute –   websites
    • If a URL is too long to fit on one line, break it at a slash (/)
    • NOTE:  When citing an entire website  (and not a specific document on that site), no Reference List entry is required if the address for the site is cited in the text of your paper. Example:
The website Global sea turtle population declines provides extensive background and statistics on the endangered turtle species (http://www.seaturtles.org/population_decline.html).
  • University of Virginia School of Medicine -  a part of a website
