This collection of 11 essays by an international group of scholars is designed as a guide to Joyce's works for students and the general reader. The opening essay, which is by the editor, considers the relationship between Joyce's texts and the texts that surround them, thus addressing the problems and anxieties normally encountered by the novice reader of Joyce. Other topics include Irish and Continental influences on Joyce's writing, Joyce's life as a Parisian, Joyce and feminism, the connections of his work to modernism and postmodernism, and the textual ribbons that wind through Joyce's oeuvre. Individual essays discuss Joyce's earlier works (Stephen Hero, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), his shorter works (poems and epiphanies, Giacomo Joyce, and Exiles), Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake.
