Editor Kurian (president of the Encyclopedia Society) has overseen the publication of this magisterial and welcome four-volume set. It features 1,400-plus entries and provides a trove of valuable information in an extremely easy-to-use format. This work provides readers with an excellence place to start their research. The encyclopedia's relatively short, readable essays are each signed and augmented with a select bibliography. Overall, the essays, from more than 350 contributors, are of excellent quality throughout. The breadth of the work is impressive; it is nicely laid out with a thematic list of contents. Seven groups of subjects encompass core articles consisting of commentary, historical background, and comprehensive reviews of the literature. Included are articles on chronological history, geography, denominations, and biography. Interpretive essays delve substantially into key issues, events, places, concepts, and ideas that have driven Christianity over the centuries. Contributors include a number of international authors, though the encyclopedia does not strike this reviewer as a widely wrought ecumenical effort. The set provides a modest list of black-and-white illustrations, no color, and a minimum of maps. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and general readers. W. J.
