Ed Hardy (b. 1945) is one of the best-known tattoo artists in the world and is often credited with taking tattooing from its sordid 1950s image to the cultural icon it is now. Director Omori met Hardy when she wanted a Japanese-style full-back tattoo and later decided to document his life and journey. The film moves easily from Hardy's youth and work as an artist in San Francisco to his early days tattooing in San Diego's naval port and opening his own studio in San Francisco. It closes with the transformation of his name into a global brand and his return to the painter's life. Omori's interviews with Hardy are engrossing as he recounts both his personal and professional history. A gentle, erudite man, Hardy exudes skill and a passion for art that are evident in the beautifully shot graphics of his work. Including partial nudity, this is fascinating viewing for anyone with an interest in tattooing or Ed Hardy. Highly recommended for adult audiences interested in pop culture and modern art.-Catherine Gilmore, MLS, Portland, OR (c) Copyright 2012.
