Pour beaucoup d'anciens esclaves le travail forcé va rapidement remplacer le travail servile, la liberté générale n'est pas la liberté absolue, pourtant de réels progrès vont marquer cette courte période peu connue de l'histoire. What happened between the first abolition of slavery, decreed by the Convention in 1794, under the double pressure of the slave uprisings and the English invasion, and its restoration in 1802 by Bonaparte? How did this proclaimed general freedom, which gave its universalism to the Declaration of Human Rights, actually translate into the colonies concerned, Santo Domingo, Guadeloupe and Guyana, but also in slave ports, and in economic and revolutionary circles of power? For many former slaves forced labor will quickly replace bonded labor, general freedom is not absolute freedom, yet real progress will mark this short, little-known period of history. | ||
