Review by Choice Review

The latest in a series of printed publications issued by ABC-Clio from the databases used to produce the indexes America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts. Volume 1 covers the US and Canada and contains 1,461 entries. Volume 2 covers all other countries of the world in 3,347 entries. Titles included were published between 1972 and 1987. Western languages predominate. The format will be familiar to users of ABC-Clio indexes; broad subject and country headings in the table of contents, an author index, and a detailed subject index. Still, a complete literature search is not always assured. For example, a bibliography "Reference Materials in Russian Soviet Area Studies" appears annually in the Russian Review. While all articles published within the scope of the bibliography are included in Volume 2, some are included in the section "Russian Empire," others in the "USSR and Antecedents." Likewise in the subject index some entries appear under "Russian Studies," others under "Soviet Studies." The unifying entry is the author/compiler. Bibliographies in History, unlike some of the other publications in this series (see Historiography, CH, Feb '88), can be recommended to libraries holding the ABC-Clio indexes. Upper-division and graduate students can be referred to it, particularly those whose research projects do not require the exhaustive literature search, and ensuing expense, that an online search provides. Students will be able to avoid the tedium of extensive searching in the print indexes and may quickly determine whether a recent bibliography on their research topic exists. M.
