This attractively produced book is by the author of The 1990-91 Almanac of Consumer Markets (CH, Sep'90) and closely resembles that title in layout. The content is based on figures from the 1988 Consumer Expenditure Survey, a survey conducted annually by the US Census Bureau, with results compiled and published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to the average annual expenditures figures from that survey, Ambry's book contains tables giving share of average spending, indexed expenditures, and aggregate expenditures. Also available are five-year trend figures for each category. Each broad expenditure category section is introduced with an essay giving an overview. The layout and production quality of this work are impressive. A variety of typefaces and well-done graphics add clarity and emphasis where needed. The vast array of statistics is well organized; graphs are effective; there is a good table of contents and index. Recommended for all libraries needing consumer expenditures information. -D.
