Blessing, author of "The Irish in America", Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups (CH, Jan'81), and several books in Irish-American studies, presents an exhaustive guide to materials on the Irish-American experience. The volume is divided into four distinct sections: "Bibliography," "Manuscript Collections," "Government Manuscripts and Publications," and "Statistical Overview." Of special interest to researchers are the first section's bibliographies, biographical dictionaries, general guides, and sources of statistics. The manuscript collections are listed by state and city, including detailed holding information pertinent to Irish-American research. Government materials are inventoried by agency. Included for select agencies citations to reference tools available that facilitate data retrieval. Government documents concerning Irish Americans, often hard to retrieve, are posted from the 15th Congress (1817-1819) to the 99th Congress (1985-1987). Of major import to researchers are the statistics found in the last section. More than 30 tables display a broad spectrum of demographic variables for both the US and Ireland, 1820-1985. A thorough index completes the work. Recommended for Irish-American studies collections, undergraduate and graduate level. M. A. Lutes; University of Notre Dame
