The work of hundreds of scholars from a variety of academic and cultural backgrounds, this first large-scale reference book devoted to Asian Americans reflects a need to understand this diverse, historically neglected group. The volumes emphasize the experiences of Asian immigrants and their communities, and provide essential background information concerning the history, language, and culture of the countries of origin of various Asian American groups. Some 2,000 entries, ranging from brief definitions to 4,000-word essays, treat important individuals, organizations, laws, and landmark court cases. The text is enhanced by many charts, tables, lists, maps, and more than 1,000 vivid historical photographs. The set offers as well a comprehensive bibliography, a general index, and a subject list arranged by population groups and by subject headings. Highly recommended for college and university libraries. M. Meng; St. John's University
