Hard Right is a thorough review of the background of the white right wing in South Africa, which still has the potential for undermining the viability of "the new South Africa" led by President Nelson Mandela. Van Rooyen's work is a revision of his doctoral dissertation at the University of Cape Town, with a brief concluding "update" unfortunately serving mainly to date the comments, as they were directed at the period just before the historic nonracial national vote in April 1994 that brought Mandela and his African National Congress into office. Although written in rather sparse, utilitarian language, the book provides a scholarly, thorough, and convenient compilation of information about the right wing in South Africa (perhaps one third of the white population). Upper-division undergraduate through faculty.
