Review by Choice Review

Thoroughly revised and greatly expanded, this new edition (1st edition, 1985) contains 500 new entries, while the recycled ones have been reexamined and updated where necessary. The editors have also expanded the scope of the work to include not only writers of belles lettres but also historians, critics, and journalists. In addition to authors, entries include, inter alia, cultural organizations, historical events, idioms, places, and publishers. The new edition also devotes more space to multicultural and women's writing, offering a more inclusive view of present-day Australian society. Although the Companion meticulously lists and summarizes the works of its chosen authors, it often omits critical commentary, which would be particularly helpful for those using this reference work as the first stop for information. Still, this is a very thorough and up-to-date source, particularly valuable for information on the current literary scene in Australia and indispensable for academic and public libraries. L.
