The appearance of this excellent parallel-text edition of Dante's notorious and much-discussed essay in political theory is a landmark in Dante studies, and not only in the English-speaking world. Shaw (University College of London) has been working for many years on a new edition of the Latin text, the first complete version of which is presented here; it differs significantly in some two score readings from P.G. Ricci's Edizione nazionale Monarchia (1965). (A full-scale critical edition with apparatus is to follow shortly.) Shaw also provides an accurate and readable translation, a stimulating introduction, thorough and up-to-date annotation (helpfully placed at the foot of the page), an exemplary select bibliography, and two indexes, one of key words in the Latin and the other--especially useful for this dense and closely argued text--of names and subjects. Shaw's achievement makes all other English-language versions of Monarchia automatically obsolete. Indispensable for serious collections in Dante studies, medieval studies, and the history of political thought. S. Botterill University of California, Berkeley
