Almost a decade has passed since publication of the first edition (CH, July/Aug'87), during which time the field of Japanese studies has experienced noticeable changes in research orientation and a reconceptualization of postwar Japan. The considerable increase in new materials over the past eight years justifies publication of this new edition. Although several bibliographies have appeared since 1986, most have been limited to specialized areas. This edition follows the basic structure of the first edition, retaining its multidisciplinary content, chronological focus, and topical layout. Among the book's seven sections, five treat historical periods, each with a number of topical subdivisions. The other two are lists of bibliographies and journals. A single index of names is a useful addition. Because of its original design as "personal bibliographies," and its concern for the classroom teaching environment, the book suffers from sporadic emphases and uneven coverage in certain periods and disciplines. However, it is a very good general and practical guide for undergraduate students interested in Japanese history and culture. M. Meng; St. John's University (NY)
