Review by Choice Review
Coming 15 years after the first, this second edition adds 38 new entries and updates others. New material covers not just contemporary poets, screenwriters, and journalists but also authors from the 12th to 20th centuries whose importance has become more apparent. A few entries have been dropped. Like its predecessor, this edition provides clear, concise bibliographies that attempt to place major and minor Italian authors within a broad cultural context. The editors assume that many general readers will turn to this work for an introduction to Italian literature, and therefore they have included literary movements and terminology. Each entry concludes with a brief bibliography of primary works, including English translations, and selected works of criticism; particular attention has been given to updating these bibliographies. Most entries are written by the editors; others are written and signed by experts whose credentials are fully described. Useful appendixes provide chronological tables that correlate Italian literature with world literature and with political, cultural, and scientific events; a listing of entries grouped by topic or period; and a comprehensive index. Recommended for all academic and larger public libraries. J. G. Bryan University of Pennsylvania
