Not a comprehensive dictionary, this mistitled work is an extended index to the ten-volume Ante-Nicene Fathers (1885-96; reprinted by Hendrickson, 1994). The 700 entries are arranged alphabetically in two columns. Each entry provides a brief description, followed by quotations on the topic from Ante-Nicene Fathers. Entries range in length from 12 lines for "Saul" to 32 pages for "Christ, Divinity of." Helpful cross-references follow each entry. The weakness of this volume for scholars is that the quotations are not newly translated from the original documents but are a modernization in spelling and grammar of the English translation made in 1885-87 for the Ante-Nicene Fathers set. However, the book does have value as an introductory resource about early Christianity. Recommended for undergraduate academic libraries. G. Holloway; David Lipscomb University
