The second edition has several changes: all the illustrations have been removed, leaving more space for biographical entries, and the "Contemporaries" and "Connections" sections have also been removed. The very useful "Ready Reference" guide, retained from the first edition (CH, Jan'95), is made obvious at the end of the volume by a change in the fore-edge color. Although the page count is smaller, the dictionary portion includes about 16,000 entries, covering 26,000 people, with an emphasis on 20th-century personalities. Entries range from Madeleine Albright to the Spice Girls, and average 70 words per entry. An improvement over the first edition, recommended for academic and public libraries. D. Generally the most current, especially in covering contemporary pop culture. New edition adds nearly 700 entries, for a total of around 16,000. Provides some pronunciation guides, 40 sidebars, and a ready-reference section listing 10,000 more names in tabular format.
