The title chosen by Dunn for this very well written research guide says it all. Dunn has compiled information about the most important research issues into a wide-ranging, yet detailed, presentation targeted specifically at students. Using extensive examples from the APA publication manual and from other sources, Dunn illustrates each point and brings even the most abstract research concept to a level of concrete applicability. Each chapter includes fascinating "Research Digression" modules containing analogies and stories designed to clarify and reinforce concepts. Full of tips, guidelines, warnings, rules, and examples, The Practical Researcher takes the reader from such topics as hypothesis formation and literature review to publication and presentation. In a rare and refreshing manner, the author offers statements of encouragement sure to motivate the most apprehensive student researcher. A fine textbook for undergraduate psychology research classes, a great supplementary text for graduate research classes, and an excellent reference for the professional psychological researcher, this volume should be in every library supporting psychology curricula at the upper-division undergraduate level and above.
