No similar book has been published, and libraries should not postpone acquiring this volume. Nadel's introduction is superior for its scope and economy. Chapters by various authorities cover Pound and music, economics, gender, visual arts, and criticism. Included are chapters on successive parts of The Cantos and one that places Pound at the center of literary modernism. Among many excellent contributions are Wendy Flory's eminently sane handling of the still-sensitive problem of antisemitism and Ming Xie's comprehensive but succinct treatment of Pound's translations. A model of its kind, this companion will serve undergraduate and graduate students, general readers, lecturers in need of a quick brush up, and those who have read randomly about Pound and now need a clear path through the jungle. All the academic "stuff" is also here: a lush chronology, a bibliography, an ample index, and helpful notes at the end of each essay. This reviewer gives it an unqualified recommendation. J. N.
