Building Planet Earth is a revision and retitling of the earlier The Story of the Earth, by Cattermole (NASA) with coauthor Patrick Moore (CH, Mar'86). This new book is an attempt to blend both physical and historical geology, the former in the sense of large-scale geophysical and magmatic processes, the latter in the sense of the geological evolution of Earth's surface. Biological evolution makes occasional appearances but is not a central theme. This is not a modern textbook: its style is not pedagogic, and it lacks end-of-chapter summaries, study guides, discussion questions, suggestions for additional reading, and accompanying slides and transparencies. It does provide a brief list of relevant Web sites. Some of the discussion and treatment of topics has not taken advantage of new knowledge now available. This reviewer finds it difficult to identify the target audience for this book. General readers; lower-division undergraduates. H. N. Pollack; University of Michigan
