Hischak's latest volume in this classic reference set (three earlier volumes, CH, Sep'94, Mar'96, Jul'97, were by Gerald Bordman) continues the breezy style and comprehensive coverage of previous volumes. The work intends to overview plays opening on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. For each play, Hischak provides a brief synopsis, date of opening, name of theater, primary actors, and critical reception. Musicals and magic and puppet shows are excluded. Instead of supplying capsule entries for each play, Hischak writes chapter-length essays for each entire season, trying to summarize its mood, tenor, and character. The chronological arrangement of plays allow him to comment on larger trends in contemporary theater, as issues such as AIDS, Vietnam, and discrimination swell or dwindle. Although clearly most appropriate for reference collections, the book's engaging style and readability may warrant a second copy for circulation. Recommended for all libraries. D.
