Significant changes in organization and content have been expertly applied to this fourth edition. Alphabetically arranged by city, the 1,231 entries include a thorough profile of each organization, including a section on historical background. Both archival and nonarchival holdings are described. Essential contact information has been updated to provide e-mail addresses. For the first time, this edition includes business archives and combines in the main index alphabetical entries for depositories and entries for collections. A section on useful organizations and Web sites and a bibliography of archival publications are included. Especially noteworthy is a list of repositories that did not respond to the survey and a second of those that were approached but had no archives. A similar directory has been issued by the American Association for State and Local History, Directory of Historical Organizations in the United States and Canada (1990- ), but this British publication surpasses its American cousin in organization and inclusiveness. Highly recommended for all libraries and archives with general reference collections and strongly recommended for those building collections in professional information science. A.
