Review by Choice Review
This revised edition is the best introduction to Greek literature available for students at all levels and general readers. A decade or more of reflection has led Beye to make significant revisions in his original survey (1975), which takes the form of a sensitive and intelligent commentary on the development of Greek literature and thought from Homer to the Alexandrian period. Readers will be well served by the historical background to literary development and Beye's critical insight into individual works. The introductory chapter on the Greek language will be very helpful to readers of Classical literature in translation. The extensive, updated bibliography will guide students to more advanced studies of Greek texts. Chronological tables are also a useful addition. Written with fluency, clarity, and objectivity, this fine survey has no peer and deserves widespread use.-L. Golden, Florida State University
