Inwood (Univ. of Toronto) has edited a superb addition to the Cambridge series of companions to philosophy. The volume contains commissioned articles by outstanding American and European scholars that approach stoicism from three different angles: the school's image and influence through history, the history of stoic thought, and its influence on philosophical tradition. Contributors address the entire stoic philosophy with thorough but easily accessible articles on epistemology, logic, physics and cosmology, theology, determinism, metaphysics, ethics, moral psychology, and naturalism. This book begins with two articles on the history of the school and ends with stoic contributions to traditional grammar, astronomy, and philosophical tradition. Overall, the volume is first-rate: its clarity and straightforwardness make it an obvious choice for the novice, and the freshness of the articles brings to light the last word in stoic scholarship. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
