Cleary (National Univ. of Ireland, Maynooth) and Connolly (Cardiff Univ.) have produced an important work that will be of use to readers with a general or specialized interest in modern Ireland, which the editors loosely describe as beginning around 1800. Their introductory essay offers a thematic overview of the relationship between modernity and traditional Irish culture, challenging the conventional view that colonial authorities imposed modern culture from above and thereby replaced native Gaelic culture. Most of the following contributions illustrate this point through their (necessarily) brief treatment of a wide array of Irish topics. Cleary and Connolly are also to be commended for their editorial judgment, as they have drawn expert opinions on fields like Irish unionism, prose fiction, and visual art as well as the more obvious aspects of Irish culture. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
