Torrell, a French medievalist of repute, provides here the most up-to-date biography available. He is especially concerned with showing Thomas's relationships with his family, his religious order, and the intellectual life of his day and how central in his life were his religious convictions and dedication. The author also discusses the occasions, contents, and dating of Thomas's writings. Up to now, James A. Weisheipl's Friar Thomas d'Aquino: His Life, Thought, and Works (1974; 2nd ed., 1983) was the standard life. It will be preferred by many, for it has a more gracious style and clear, lively descriptions of the background and events of Thomas's life. However, anyone pursuing more specialized work will require Torrell, who incorporates important findings of recent scholarship. For all libraries supporting a philosophy major.
