Roche (University College Dublin) has gathered a body of outstanding essays illuminating Friel's contributions to Irish and world theater. Focusing on the dramatist's use of themes, social issues, translations, and stage effects, the wide-ranging essays examine Friel's oeuvre from his early plays to his most recent work and provide a comprehensive study that gives insights into both text and performance. The contributors are a stellar group that includes, in addition to playwrights Frank McGuinness and Thomas Kilroy--who write on the early plays--scholars Nicholas Grene, Helen Lojek, Richard Pine, Patrick Burke, and Csilla Bertha, to name just a few. Including a timeline, selected bibliography, and useful index, this volume will be an important resource for those interested in Friel in particular and in Irish literature and contemporary drama in general.
