Distinctive Collections Donation Policy
Falvey Library welcomes and encourages gifts of rare and unique materials in support of the development of Villanova University's Distinctive Collections. Donors help sustain growth of our Distinctive Collections; many of the Library’s most valuable resources and special collections originated in this way. Donations are important to the continued vitality and relevance of distinctive collections. They contribute to supporting the research, teaching, learning, and service aspects of rare materials. We especially welcome gifts that enhance existing collections, contribute to original scholarship conducted by the University community, and further develop the richness of resources used by the Library's patrons.
Distinctive Collections and Digital Engagement staff may accept donations of individual manuscripts, photographs, maps, small collections, or other items with an estimated value of $5,000 or less if they are within the scope of our Distinctive Collections. It is recommended that the donor supply a list of the items to be considered for donation to the Director of Distinctive Collections and Digital Engagement as an initial step. The staff may decline any items that are not within the scope of Distinctive Collections; that duplicate items already in the collections; that are in poor condition; or that have little historic interest. Gifts estimated to exceed $5,000 must go through University Advancement and require approval from the University Librarian. Such gifts must be accompanied by a signed "Deed of Gift" document.
Falvey Library cannot provide estimates of the value of donated materials. Donors are advised to contact tax experts or visit the IRS web site for details of taking a tax deduction. If you wish to have your materials appraised prior to donation, the American Society of Appraisers can help you locate an appraiser. The Library reserves the right to donate gift items to non-profit organizations, dispose of items that are not in good conditions, or recycle materials as necessary. Gifts estimated to exceed $5,000 must go through University Advancement and require approval from the University Librarian. Donors wishing to have a signed IRS gift documentation form must provide Falvey Library and University Advancement staff with a signed copy of the appraisal as well as the appropriate IRS forms.
Falvey Library also welcomes and appreciates monetary donations in any amount. Monetary donations can support collection building as well as providing new services and improving the facilities of the Library. Please click here to contribute to the Library today!
