Event Description:

Please join us for the 2021 Outstanding Faculty Research Award Lecture featuring co-recipients Christopher Kilby, PhD, and Samantha K. Chapman, PhD, on Monday, March 28 from 1-3 p.m. in Falvey Memorial Library’s room 205.

At this event, Dr. Kilby and Dr. Chapman will each give presentations that highlight the extensive research that led them to win the coveted Outstanding Faculty Research Award in 2021.

First, Dr. Kilby, Professor, Department of Economics, Villanova School of Business, will discuss his work on US influence in the World Bank and how this can undermine the institution’s apolitical mandate to alleviate poverty and provide important global public goods. The talk will focus on Dr. Kilby’s recent projects that explore the role of US domestic politics in this process and on the World Bank’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following a short Q&A and break, Dr. Chapman, Professor, Department of Biology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will speak on how coastal wetlands protect human communities from big storms and help mitigate climate change through carbon storage. Dr. Chapman will explore how these thin strips of green that line the earth’s coasts are threatened by sea level rise and development, and how we can manage our coasts to help us adapt to climate change and move into a more sustainable future.

Light refreshments will be served. This event, co-sponsored by Falvey Memorial Library and the Office of the Provost, is free and open to the public.

Speakers’ Information:

Samantha K. Chapman, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Biology and Co-Director of the Center for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stewardship at Villanova University. She earned a BS at The Pennsylvania State University and a MS and PhD at Northern Arizona University. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

Dr. Chapman’s areas of expertise include biodiversity loss; climate change effects on coastal wetlands; invasive species; and carbon storage and sequestration.

Some of Dr. Chapman’s accomplishments include her appointment as Anne Quinn Welsh Honors Faculty Fellow at Villanova University from 2017-2019; her position as a Health and Science Advisory Board member of WHYY and receiving funding from NASA, the National Science Foundation, NOAA and the USDA. Her research has been featured in over 30 media pieces

Dr. Chapman has served as an editor for the journals Ecology and the Journal of Ecology, is a member of the NSF Coastal Carbon Research Coordination Network, and has been a member of NASA Climate Adaptation Science Investigators Group

She has authored over 40 publications and is the Principal Investigator on WETFEET, a National Science Foundation-Funded team that is studying how Florida coastal wetlands provide ecosystem services for human beings.

Christopher Kilby, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the Villanova School of Business. He earned his AB from Harvard University and a PhD from Stanford University.

Dr. Kilby’s areas of expertise include: development economics; foreign aid; multilateral aid; and the World Bank.

Dr. Kilby was selected as a Fulbright Scholar at University of Heidelberg in Germany from Oct. 2021 to Feb. 2022 and helps run an annual international conference on the political economy of international organizations, the next iteration of which will held at Oxford University in July. He also serves as the book review editor for The Review of International Organizations.

Dr. Kilby’s previous awards include: VIRS Small Research Grant in 2020; Center for Global Leadership Research Excellence Awards in 2013, 2016, and 2017; Emerging Scholar in International Business from 2013-2016; McDonough Family Faculty Research Award in 2015; Villanova Summer Research Fellowships in 2009 and 2019; Ford Scholars Award in 2005; Mellon Faculty Career Enhancement Grant in 2004; Vassar Faculty Research Grant-in-Aid in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2004, and 2006; and a Postdoctoral Fellowship, Center for Economic Research, Tilburg, the Netherlands 1993-1994.

Dr. Kilby is the author or co-author of numerous publications, including journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, and blog posts.
