Sleuthing Potential Data Sources

Literature Review 

Looking at data used by researchers that have gone before you is a great way to identify potential data sources.  Data cited in the bibliographies or described in the methods sections of research articles may be the first step to publically available data.  Use recommended scholarly article databases to find articles by topic.  Pay close attention to data sources described.  Google the data source name to see if it is freely available on the web or search the library web site to see if Villanova suscribes.  If you do no find the data sources, check with the Business Librarian.

If you would like to browse available data by subject or topic. Searching indices and abstracts that cover a broad range of data types may lead to data sets for variables.

  Statistical Insight (ProQuest)
Indexing and abstracting (with select full text from 2007) of statistical resources from U.S. state government, business and research institute statistical publications. Tables for U.S. government and business reports.

  Statistical Abstract of the United States
Site provides access to current 2012 PDF and past editions.  Includes everything from government spending to the environment to communications. It is a most comprehensive one-volume reference source on the Nation's economic and social condition.

Free directory of links to official statistics on the web searchable by country or topic.
