Artstor (ITHAKA)  Tutorial  Access Instructions
Provides access to a large library of high-resolution digital images from museums and archives. The multi-disciplinary collection includes digital copies of fashion plates, cartoons, posters, post cards, book illustrations, botanical and wildlife illustrations, technical illustrations, museum objects, and photo journalism, besides the expected artwork.

Features online access to the world’s art and culture in collaboration with cultural institutions and artist from around the world. Explores individual artists, art movements, and much more.

Getty Open Content Program
Features over 100,000 digital images from the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute.

Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)
Digital reproductions of many artworks in the Met’s collections are open access and free to download. The provenance and bibliographic information accompanying a work offer valuable starting points for further research about art objects and artists.

Philadelphia Area Collections

Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA)
Houses a world-renowned art collection. Features an online collection database with images of artwork from the collection.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)
Founded in 1805, the Academy is America's first school and museum of fine arts with a world-class collection of American art. A catalog of the collection with images of selected artwork is available online.

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum)
Selected objects can be viewed online. Object descriptions include detailed descriptions and a bibliography of relevant literature.

African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP)
The online collections database presents a wide selection of African and African American objects and images.

Preserves, develops, and promotes Puerto Rican arts and culture.

Scholarly Analysis and Criticism

Much of the scholarly literature in the field is published in books which are often referred to as monographs. Find books in the Library’s collection with a Books & Media search. For a more comprehensive review of the literature consult WorldCat and use the integrated Borrow from other libraries feature to request books which are not locally available. The Library subscribes to a wide range of academic art and architecture journals. Use the Journal & Article Finder or the Articles & more search options on the Library’s website to look up known references. Request articles from journals that are not part of the Library's collections through interlibrary loan. The journal databases listed below index the contents of most relevant journals and are first-class discovery tools.

Grove Encyclopedia of American Art
Includes articles on all subject areas in American fine art including biographies of major artists, architects and patrons, architecture, painting, new media, photography, sculpture, installation art, performance art, new media art, art education, and more.

Books & Media
Books are an important source of critical literature. Take advantage of the search options available in the library's catalog. Start with a keyword search and use the hyper-linked Library of Congress subjects to focus your search results. Alternatively, use available facets such as topic and language to narrow search results. Subject searches can significantly increase or decrease search results. Use the Online collection facet to limit results to ebooks.

Art Full Text (EBSCO)
Indexes the contents of academic journals and magazines in the fields of fine and decorative arts, architecture, and photography. Includes citations for dissertations, book reviews, and art reproductions published in indexed journals. Abstracts are available back to 1984 with selective full text available back to 1995.

This page enables you to search millions of full text articles and other electronic resources available through Falvey Library. While it doesn't provide access to everything the library has to offer, it is an excellent starting point for your searches. Check Limit to articles from peer-reviewed journals to focus on scholarly journal articles.

Oxford Bibliographies (Oxford University Press)  Tutorial
Presents peer-reviewed, annotated bibliographies and expert commentary on current scholarship in selected disciplines including Art History. Some of the recommended resources may currently not be available.

Contemporary Reception

Limit search results to the years when the artwork was first exhibited to discover contemporary art reviews of your selected artwork. Use the artist's birth and death dates if the year of the first exhibition is not available.

American Periodicals (ProQuest)
Provides access to the full text of American magazines and journals published from the colonial period to the early 20th century.

New York Times: 1851- (ProQuest Historical Newspapers)
Provides full text access to the complete New York Times archive except for the most recent five years. Use NYTimes.com, Nexis Uni, or ABI/INFORM for access to current content.

Philadelphia Inquirer, 1860-2009 (ProQuest Historical Newspapers)
Provides full text access to the complete Philadelphia Inquirer archive up to 2009. Use Philadelphia Inquirer (NewsBank) for access to current content.

Philadelphia Inquirer, 1981- (NewsBank)
Provides full text access to articles published since 1981. Does not include ads, calendar listings, horoscopes, sports statistics, stock tables, weather forecasts, and puzzles.
