Company Reports

Company profiles or reports are compiled by independent information services.  They typically include a description of the business, history, background on leadership, financial performance, stock performance, number of employees, family tree or subsidiaries, competitors and more.

Annual reports or 10Ks are documents publically traded companies are required to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission.  They are vehicles for communicating with potential investors and alerting the public to financial performance and potential risks.  Company databases listed below link to 10Ks and annual reports, you can usually find them on the investor relations pages of company websites or get them directly from EDGAR the SEC's databases.

Offers public and private company and industry information including company profiles, market research reports from Marketline, Freedonia, Euromonitor, and RMA updated with recent news, executive profiles, and analyst reports.

  Mergent Online  Limitations on Use
Provides detailed financial statements for U.S. and international public and private companies, including SEC filings and current and historical annual reports for U.S. and international public companies. Data can be downloaded in a variety of formats. Also includes country profiles.

  NetAdvantage (Standard & Poor's Capital IQ)
Offers market information, company quotes, equity index information, industry information (including the S&P Industry Surveys), and economic data.

Industry Reports

Industry reports are akin to Cliff Notes or Spark Notes for people who need to understand the fundamentals or dynamics of businesses that engage in similar primary activities.  They typically define the activity, list competitors, estimate market share, discuss barriers to entry, market drivers, operating conditions and performance and outlook.  There are a variety of classification codes used to describe and define industries such as NAICS, SIC.  Classification codes are also used to find industry reports.

  First Research Industry Profiles (ABI/Inform Collection - ProQuest)
Provides industry profiles with critical analysis, statistics, and forecasts. Coverage extends back to 2009.

Business News

Business news is written by journalists that adhere to the ethical and objective standards of their profession.  Business news is published in online newspapers, and what are sometimes referred to as trade publications or magazines or even blogs. 

Press releases are news issued by organizations to the press and public.  They are a source of information, but are not necessarily unbiased as companies usually present themselves in the best possible light. Press releases are usually listed on the investor relations page of company web sites and republished in many business databases. 

Earnings or Conference Call Transcripts are recordings of presentations chief officers give to financial analysts when quarterly earnings are announced.  Officers explain their firms performance and respond to questions.  D&B Hoovers provides links.

Provides access to scholarly journals, dissertations, working papers, key business and economics periodicals, and country- and industry-focused reports.

  Business Source Premier (EBSCO)
Provides access to a wide range of academic business journals and trade magazines. Topics include management, marketing, finance, economics, and management information systems. Full text access may be embargoed for up to three years. Coverage goes back to 1965.
