You're likely to identify the main competitors by way of market research and industry reports, but these databases provide basic independent background on public and private companies.

Your research into competitors should start but not end with their web sites and social media.  In addition to company reports, you should seek out news about competitors in the general business press and trade journals.

Market research reports provided by firms such as Mintel are a key source of insight into consumers interests and behaviors.  You may also find studies on the free internet, but examine them closely for bias, objectivity, research method, publisher/author reputation and overall credibility before use.  Scholarly studies on consumer behavior may also be helpful.
