Encyclopedias, Companions & Handbooks

The Library has a large collection of reference works, most of them in electronic format. Below is a small selection of encyclopedias, companions, and handbooks that are excellent starting points for your research project. Oxford Handbooks Online (Oxford University Press)
Each handbook introduces and surveys the state of scholarship in a field of study through review articles written by leading subject specialists. Articles review key issues and debates and set the agenda for new research.

Oxford Bibliographies (Oxford University Press)  Tutorial
Presents peer-reviewed, annotated bibliographies and expert commentary on current scholarship in selected disciplines.

Oxford Research Encyclopedias (Oxford University Press)
Offers peer-reviewed topical introductions and literature reviews written by well-regarded authorities. Available in selected subject areas. New topics are regularly added.

Handbook of North American Indians
Offers expert introductions to and overviews of all aspects of Native American history and life written by subject specialists. The series was conceived by the staff of the Department of Anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History and published over 44 years by the Smithsonian. Publication concluded with the first volume which appeared in 2022. Four originally planned volumes (16, 18-20) were abandoned and will not be published. Volume 1 is also available in digital format.

Handbook of North American Indians: Introduction (2022)
Includes a series overview, the publication history of the series, and research updates. Published in 2022, volume 1 concludes the Smithsonian's Handbook of North American Indians project. Other volumes in the series are only available in print.

Books and Book Chapters

Much of the scholarly literature in the field is published in books which are often referred to as monographs. Find books in the Library’s collection with a Books & Media search. For a more comprehensive review of the literature consult WorldCat and use the integrated Borrow from other libraries feature to request books which are not locally available.

Presents a combined catalog of the catalogs of more than 10,000 libraries worldwide. WorldCat highlights publications available at Villanova University. Other items can be requested via an inter-library loan request form.

Provides a full text archive of academic journals and books in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. The most recent three to five years of a journal are usually not included.

Academic Journals

The Library subscribes to a wide range of academic journals including The Journal of Genocide Research and The American Indian Quarterly. Use the Journal & Article Finder or the Articles & more search options on the Library’s website to look up known references. Request articles from journals that are not part of the Library's collections through interlibrary loan. The journal databases listed below index the contents of most relevant journals and are first-class discovery tools.

JSTOR
Provides a full text archive of academic journals and books in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. The most recent three to five years of a journal are usually not included.

America: History and Life (EBSCO)
Indexes the literature covering the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Includes citations for journal and magazine articles, book reviews, and dissertations. Abstracts of journal articles are included together with selected full-text. Indexing goes back to 1964.

Journal of Genocide Research
Publishes research on genocide and related phenomena, like crimes against humanity, war crimes and violence against civilians and humanitarian intervention.

American Indian Quarterly
Offers a forum for diverse voices and perspectives spanning a variety of academic disciplines. The common thread is AIQ’s commitment to publishing work that contributes to the development of American Indian studies as a field and to the sovereignty and continuance of American Indian nations and cultures.

Primary Sources

Are you planning to use primary sources for your project? Your choice of topic will guide you in identifying the most suitable primary sources. Define what kind of sources you need to support your argument and then determine whether such sources exist and how you can gain access. Contact a librarian for assistance if needed.

Ethnic NewsWatch (ProQuest)
Offers access to the full text of articles from newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority, and native press. While most of the content is in English, some content in non-English languages is included. Coverage for most newspapers and magazines goes back to the early 1990s. Includes among other titles The Native American Times, Indian Country Today, and News from Indian Country.

American Indian Newspapers (Adam Matthew Digital)
Sourced from the Sequoyah National Research Center (University of Arkansas at Little Rock) and the Newberry Library in Chicago, this newspaper archive covers nearly two hundred years of American Indian history in North America from 1828 to 2016 and offers American Indian perspectives on federal and tribal politics, self-representation, environmental activism, the American Indian Movement, tribal schools and colleges, and many other topics. It also features a series of topical essays.

Independent Voices (Reveal Digital/JSTOR)
Offers digital access to alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.

Introduces tools and strategies for working with historical and current newspapers and magazines. Includes an A-Z list of newspaper & magazine archives.

Artstor (ITHAKA)  Tutorial  Access Instructions
Provides access to a large library of high-resolution digital images from museums and archives. The multi-disciplinary collection includes digital copies of fashion plates, cartoons, posters, post cards, book illustrations, botanical and wildlife illustrations, technical illustrations, museum objects, and photo journalism, besides the expected artwork.
