Falvey Forum 2021

The Fall 2021 Falvey Forum is a series of virtual workshops dedicated to advancing research tips, techniques, and technologies. Drawn from Falvey Memorial Library's successful Brown Bag seminar series, the conference's 11 sessions will cover a wide variety of research and library-oriented information aimed at invigorating and improving research, informing new pedagogy, and encouraging the integration of advanced academic research into personal and professional lives.

The 2020 Falvey Forum  took place on Wednesday October 21 and Thursday October 22. Some sessions were recorded via Zoom and are presented for free. To view, visit the Falvey Forum 2020 webpage.

 

 

 Introduction to Google My Maps 

Join Erica Hayes, Digital Scholarship Librarian, on Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Introduction to Google My Maps.” You have likely used Google Maps to find places and get directions, but have you heard of Google My Maps? This workshop will introduce the basic functions of web mapping using Google My Maps, an online platform for creating custom google maps with your own location points, photos, and links that can be shared with others.

Introduction to ArcGIS Online

Join Michele Gandy, GIS Laboratory Manager, Villanova University on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Introduction to ArcGIS Online.” ArcGIS Online is a cloud-based mapping application from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri). ArcGIS Online allows you to make maps, analyze spatial data, and share and collaborate with other users from any computer with an Internet connection. Access maps and data from around the globe. This session will walk you through accessing spatial data and creating your own web maps and apps quickly and easily.

ArcGIS Online Field Apps

Join Michele Gandy, GIS Laboratory Manager, Villanova University on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “ArcGIS Online Field Apps.” As a follow up to Introduction to ArcGIS Online, this session will introduce you to some of ArcGIS’s field apps for use on mobile devices, such as your smartphone or tablet. ArcGIS Field Maps allows you to perform mobile data collection and editing, find assets and information, and report your real-time locations. ArcGIS Survey123 allows you to create smart forms and analyze and share survey results. ArcGIS Dashboards enables users to convey information by presenting location-based analytics using intuitive and interactive data visualizations on a single screen.

Storytelling with GIS

Join Erica Hayes, Digital Scholarship Librarian, on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Storytelling with GIS.” While maps have been around for centuries, the digital age has given them new meaning. GIS software offers users the potential to visualize, analyze, and tell spatial stories. In this session, participants will be introduced to ArcGIS Story Maps, a web application on the ArcGIS Online platform that allows you to combine GIS maps, text, images, and other media to tell your own geographic story.

Citation Management Using Zotero

Join Sarah Hughes, Nursing and Life Sciences Librarian, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Citation Management using Zotero.” Serious research projects call for use of citation management software. At this workshop, get an introduction to Zotero, a popular and easy to use open-source citation management tool. Topics covered will include: organizing sources for projects, importing citations from databases, catalogs, and webpages, saving PDFs, formatting citations and bibliographies in Word, and creating groups for resource sharing. This ACS-approved event, sponsored by Falvey Memorial Library, is free and open to the Villanova community.

Policy Map: Selecting, Mapping and Downloading 21st Century Policy Data

Join Merrill Stein, Social Sciences Librarian, on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Policy Map: Selecting, Mapping and Downloading 21st Century Policy Data.” Explore the capabilities of Policy Map, a data mapping platform with over 35,000 current governmental, proprietary, and open resource indicators. Create visualizations and import or export data for research or teaching. Knowledge of GIS (geographical information systems) is not required.

Mapping Demographic Data with Social Explorer 

Join Deborah Bishov, Social Sciences and Instructional Design Librarian, on Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Mapping Demographic Data with Social Explorer.” Explore historical and recent demographic data using Social Explorer, an interactive mapping platform which allows for the creation of customized visualizations and presentations, as well as data downloading. Data available in Social Explorer include demographic data from the Decennial Census and American Community Survey from 1790- 2019, as well as datasets on election, health, crime, religion, and environmental topics, as well as some international demographic data. Knowledge of GIS (geographical information systems) is not required.

Creating Interactive GIS Maps with Leaflet and R

Join Erica Hayes, Digital Scholarship Librarian, on Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Creating Interactive GIS Maps with Leaflet and R.” You’ve likely used ArcGIS Online to display maps online, but have you considered using free and open-source tools for web mapping? Leaflet is one of the most popular open-source JavaScript libraries for creating interactive maps. Here’s an example Interactive Map Tracking Charges & Enforcement Related to Covid-19 created with Leaflet by two researchers in Canada. This workshop will introduce you to Leaflet for R (a statistical programming language), an R package, which makes it easier to integrate and control Leaflet maps.

Introduction to QGIS

Join Jennifer Santoro, Visiting Instructor, Department of Geography and the Environment, Villanova University, on Wednesday, Dec. 1, from 12:30–1:30 p.m. for a virtual workshop entitled “Introduction to QGIS.” QGIS is the leading free and open-source GIS software available, with functionality similar to ESRI’s ArcGIS software suite. QGIS works on multiple operating systems and allows users to create, analyze, and map spatial data. In this workshop, you’ll learn some basics of using QGIS, including adding shapefiles, using spatial analysis tools, and creating maps. Instructions for downloading and installing QGIS onto your own machine will be provided one week before the workshop.
